Legend has it that a 19th-century governor, plagued by migraines from the sun glaring off the white facades, ordered them painted in color. What makes it unique? It <strong>swings open to let ships into the harbor<\/strong>. When it&#8217;s open, small free ferries shuttle people across. Punda: Fort Amsterdam and the synagogue<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1858eb3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1858eb3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Just behind the Handelskade, <strong>Fort Amsterdam<\/strong> now houses the seat of government; you can walk into the courtyard and see its church. A few streets away, the <strong>Mikv\u00e9 Israel-Emanuel Synagogue<\/strong> is considered the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas. Its floor is covered in sand \u2013 a tradition with several possible interpretations.
