Christoffel Park and Shete Boka: Hiking and Wild Coastline in Curaçao

Curaçao isn’t just about beaches! In the northwest of the island, two neighboring national parks make for a spectacular day in nature: Christoffel Park, home to Mount Christoffel, the island’s highest peak, and Shete Boka Park, where waves come thundering into wild coves.

Here’s everything you need to know: opening hours, prices, difficulty level and our tips so you don’t get fried in the sun.

Christoffel National Park

This is Curaçao’s largest nature park, set on the grounds of former plantations. You’ll find giant cacti, wild orchids, iguanas, parakeets and, if you’re very lucky, the Curaçao white-tailed deer, a subspecies found only here.

The star attraction is Mount Christoffel, which rises to about 372 meters (1,220 ft). Modest on paper, but a proper hike: allow around 1 to 1.5 hours to climb, with a fairly steep final stretch where you’ll need your hands. From the top, on a clear day, the view over the whole island is stunning.

The park also has scenic driving routes and the small Savonet plantation museum.

⏰ The time you can't miss

The park is open daily from 6 am to 3 pm (tickets sold until 1:30 pm). But be careful: you must start climbing Mount Christoffel by 10 am at the latest because of the heat. Ideally, be at the trailhead as soon as the park opens.

  • Adults (non-residents): $15
  • Children aged 6 to 12: $2
  • Under 6: free
  • Dogs: not allowed in the park

Shete Boka National Park

A few minutes from Christoffel, Shete Boka (“seven inlets” in Papiamentu) protects the wild, wave-battered north coast. Trails lead to several bokas, small coves carved into the limestone.

  • Boka Tabla: the most famous, with a cave you can climb down into to watch – and hear – the waves rush in with an impressive roar.
  • Boka Pistol: here the waves are forced through a narrow rock channel, sending up bursts of spray with a sound like a gunshot.

The beaches in these coves are also nesting sites for sea turtles. No swimming here: the sea is far too dangerous.

Shete Boka opening hours and prices

  • Opening hours: daily from 8 am to 4 pm, last entry at 3 pm.
  • Adults: $15 · Children aged 6 to 12: $2 · Under 6: free.
  • You explore on your own, with a map handed out at the entrance.

Our plan for a day in nature

🌅 6–6:30 am: arrive at Christoffel Park and climb the mountain while it’s still cool.
🥾 9–10 am: head back down and stop by the Savonet museum.
🌊 11 am: Shete Boka and Boka Tabla.
🏖️ 1 pm: lunch and a well-earned swim on the west coast: Grote Knip, Kleine Knip or Playa Lagun.

What to bring

  • At least 1.5 liters of water per person (there’s no water along the trail)
  • Proper hiking shoes: the rock is slippery and sharp
  • A hat, sunscreen and light clothing
  • A snack
  • A swimsuit for your afternoon swim

Don't feel like driving?

The park is about 45 minutes to an hour from Willemstad. If you’d rather go with a guide, Gone Caribe’s private “Hike & Beach” tour, led by a local guide, combines nature and swimming in a single day.
